VALORIE I. HAMSTREET, 1882 - 1952
Valorie I. Hamstreet was a well-loved member of St. Margaret’s Guild. Upon her death in 1952, the guild named
its scholarship fund in her honor. Hamstreet’s husband, Loil, was a generous financial supporter of the fund.
HISTORY
St. Margaret’s House was founded in Berkeley, California in 1909 to train women for church ministry. The St. Margaret’s
Guild was established to support St. Margaret’s House. Valorie Hamstreet was a member of the St. Margaret’s
Guild at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in McMinnville, Oregon. She was an active participant in the guild’s activities
for many years.
Upon Valorie’s death in 1952, the guild established a scholarship fund, named in her honor, for women who wished to
pursue a degree in Christian Education at St. Margaret’s. Valorie’s husband, Loil, initially endowed the corpus of
the trust. Member donations at each meeting of the guild contributed to its steady growth.
The purpose of the fund is to establish a trust corpus from which the income earned can be used to benefit women
in the work of the church. Scholarships are awarded for the use of a woman student who is entering full-time
Christian service in some church-related occupation or, in lieu of such a candidate, for the use of a married
seminarian during his senior year of seminary. While it is desirable, it is not absolutely essential that
candidates come to the Diocese of Oregon. However, preference is given to those persons returning to the diocese.
Grants are also awarded for the use of a parishoner who wishes to attend church-related symposia or workshops.
The fund is administered by an all-female board, including St. Barnabas rector The Rev. Dr. Kathleen Galvin+. The
present board consists of Sandra Cronk, Edie Rissberger-Stow and JacE Macy, pictured above, left. Memorial bequests
to the fund are always welcome.
The fund has granted sixty-five scholarships since its inception.
